North Yarmouth Business Association Toddy Brook Golf Club Meeting Room

Minutes June 20, 2013

Attendance Thaddeus Day, Margie Hansel, Michael Babin, Leslie Taisey, Brian Bartlett, Andy Walsh, Ande Smith.
Thaddeus Day introduced Ande Smith, of Deer Brook Associates ( www.deer-brook.com)  Ande received his BS in Nuclear Engineering from RPI in 1987; an MA in Public Affairs from UConn in 1993, and his JD from UMaine School of Law in 1997.  He served in the US Navy as a submarine officer and more recently spent time in Somalia.  Prior to starting his own legal and consulting business he spent five years practicing law with Pierce Atwood.  He also worked for  Hannaford Brothers and their parent company Delhaize Group, heading their Information Security area, most notably was chiefly involved with the handling of their large security breach.

His current company focuses on legal and consulting services for information security, privacy, and technology.  He helps companies who have had a breach in information security.  He assists them in managing their recovery efforts, and brings in technicians who can do the painstaking work of repairing the damage.  He also can help them build sustainable policies and procedures to protect company data.  As a lawyer he can aid in the myriad issues that arise when a breach occurs.

He recommends avoiding purchasing “Cyber Risk Insurance” unless you have lots of personal customer information such as credit card info, Soc. Sec. numbers, etc.   Anti virus protection is more important to invest in.

Using the cloud to house your data has good and bad points. Amazon for example leases their servers to large companies.  While this kind of data storage is a magnate for cyber thieves, a company like Amazon has the funds to invest in state of the art protection programs and equipment, and the talent to run it.  These robust systems have backup data points all over the world.  He doesn’t recommend using local, small backup cloud based systems since they don’t have sufficient size and budget to keep enough redundancy and security in place.

Discussion Minutes of May 16, 2013 meeting were NOT discussed, review and approval should be added to the next meeting agenda.

Leslie checked the NYEC website and noted we aren’t listed as a sponsor.  she will clarify whether Tri-NY sponsorship is also required to be listed.

A request was made to send out the meeting notice at least a full day in advance, and to check the distribution list to be sure all NYBA members are on it.  Nina Oatley has not been receiving reminders.

Website page minutes seem to be carrying an old date of February 14, 2013 when posted to the NYBA site even though the body of the minutes is current.  Marilyn will try to determine why this is happening.

It was moved and voted unanimously to purchase a $25 VISA gift card to donate to the North Yarmouth Fire Company dinner.  Leslie will take care of this.

The current list of paid and unpaid members was distributed, Leslie and Marilyn will work to collect the remaining dues.

Reports Treasurer Leslie Taisey reports checking acct. balance of $1135.04 as of 5/31/13.

Meeting adjourned at 8:10 AM — Respectfully Submitted: Leslie Taisey, Treasurer
