Minutes – March 21, 2019

Attendees: Darla Hamlin, Marilyn Matthews, Lincoln Merrill, Andrew Walsh, Holly and Thaddeus Day, and Margie Hansel

Guests: Martha Smith, Ashley Caswell and Dan Westhoven, MSAD 51  Pathways program.

In the interest of time early introduction was made by Thaddeus Day, for Ashley Caswell, Community Development and Resource Manager MSAD 51, and Dan Westhoven, Pathways Coordinator.

Dan functions as the Pathways Coordinator, focusing on very bright but challenged kids who benefit more from community learning experience than in the standard classroom setting. Matching the individual passions and talents of these kids to jobs that bring out their enthusiasm is what Dan specializes in. The “real world” experiences speak to these kids and motivate them to learn, and apply their skills at a much higher level. These “extended learning opportunities” draw more success to kids who are better able to apply practical knowledge in their careers. Dan’s excited to meet with LOCAL businesses to match students to “internship” type positions where they can remain local, and grow into careers close to school and home. They have placed students in large and small employer programs such as Idexx, Veritas Prime, Learning Loft, Real Estate, and others. Mentors in real working environments can set great life examples for hands on learners.

At 5:50 in the interest of time Thaddaeus introduced Ashley Caswell and Dan Westhoven from MSAD 51 Pathways Program which just completed its three-year strategic plan, and has expanded to second three-year phase.
