Meeting minutes 8/9/12

North Yarmouth Business Association

Toddy Brook Golf Club Meeting Room

Minutes   August 9, 2012

Attendance Michael Babin, Marilyn Matthews, Brian Bartlett, Janice Selig, Thaddeus Day, Leslie Taisey, Chris TyllMeeting called to order 7:05 am
Presentation Thad Day introduced guest speaker Chris Tyll to the group. Chris owns the Old Port Portland franchise of Pat’s Pizza, and is a resident of Cumberland. He is running for State Senate against incumbent Chris Woodbury in District 11 which includes Cumberland, Yarmouth, No Yarmouth, Gray, Chebeague and Long Islands.  Districts are determined by population in the towns mentioned.  He was featured last year in the “Forty Under Forty” emerging leaders in Maine.Chris was inspired to run for office by the small business needs he faced, and the roadblocks he encountered, when setting up his Pat’s Pizza franchise.  Creating jobs was easy, once he had jumped through all the hurdles of setting up a business, the greater challenge is maintaining and growing a small business.  Estate tax is a large hurdle to growing a business in Maine, as when you SELL it you face a 7 1/2 % tax.  This could be more if you die, or sell to family.Chris feels there should be much more accountability is programs such as MaineCare and other State programs. People should be able to try and maintain as much independence as possible before turning to full nursing facility care.  Full care should be for the neediest of folks.

Chris spent thirteen years in Special Forces Military Command, did four tours in Iraq, so has strong background in management and getting things done.  Overall, he has a broad understanding of what it takes to run small business, how to lead, and wants the future of Maine’s families to be strong.  He feels Maine Government is comprised of “older” members who are resistant to change, mostly retired.  He could bring a fresh sense of leadership and build a strong momentum if elected.   He wants to hear from small businessowners as to “what Augusta needs to do?”
